A haniwa, drawn in ink wash — a small figure holding its shape against the dark.
Process notes
A haniwa study — the terracotta figures made in Japan over a thousand years ago — reduced to a silhouette and a few marks. The question was how much personality survives when you take away colour and most of the detail.
The background is a single flat wash, brushed fast so the edges stay rough. The figure is built up in layers, lightest first.
